Tombstone Inscriptions of Creggan Parish


Inscriptions on tombstones are often a valuable source of information for people trying to trace their ancestors. However, tombstones are not indestructable and, apart from the inevitable process of erosion, monuments often topple and get buried by the passing years, or are destroyed in other ways. Graves can be reused and the records of previous burials can get lost.

The Creggan Local Historical Society decided soon after its creation in 1984 that it would undertake the task of mapping the parish cemeteries. The first one, that of Creggan Church, was completed in 1988. In November 2002 the inscriptions in St Patrick's Church in Cullyhanna was published.
